Through our combination of 75+ years of experience treating ear, nose, and throat disorders – we understand how debilitating life can get when experiencing challenges.
With that said, I’m here to talk about nasal obstruction and the most common cause of it – a deviated nasal septum.
Understanding Nasal Obstruction
As an ENT specialist, one of the most common complaints I hear from my patients is nasal obstruction. Nasal obstruction is the feeling of having a blocked or stuffy nose.
It can make breathing difficult through the nose, which can cause discomfort and even impact one’s quality of life.
Nasal obstruction can be caused by various factors, such as –
- Allergies
- Infections
- Structural abnormalities of the nose
A deviated nasal septum is a structural abnormality that can lead to nasal obstruction.
What is a Deviated Nasal Septum?
The nasal septum is the wall that separates the two nostrils.
In some people, this wall is not straight; instead, it deviates to one side. This can cause a narrowing of one or both nostrils, leading to difficulty breathing through the nose.
The Most Effective Treatment for Deviated Nasal Septum
The most effective treatment for a deviated nasal septum is surgery.
Septoplasty is the surgery performed to straighten the nasal septum so that it no longer obstructs the nasal passages. The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient can go home the same day.
Many of my patients are concerned about the risks or complications associated with septoplasty. As with any surgery, there are some risks involved.
However, the risks associated with septoplasty are generally low. Some possible risks include bleeding, infection, and a change in the shape of the nose.
However, these complications are rare, and most patients experience a significant improvement in their nasal breathing after the surgery.
